yogurt with probiotics brandsIdeas on how to chose the right kind and brand of Probiotics to boost my body's natural "good bacteria"?

I have been eating yogurt with live bacterial cultures to help my gastrointestinal tract.
although my gastrointestinal problems are severe, i find that eating the activia every day does truly make a difference. i buy the light/sugar free version, but i remember you once saying you didn't like artificial sweetners in another post. other companies are now coming out with similar products.

i also take two probiotic acidophilus capsules and two digestive enzyme tablets. i also use their daily cleanse kit which consists of a bottle of herb tablets and a bottle of fiber tablets. my gastroenterolgist had these analyzed by his lab and now recommends them to other patients.
these can also be purchased through the puritans pride catalog.

the best prices in my experience are at puritanspride.com.

you should check out their website.

Hey Been There For Sure !! Thanx for the support buddy. I have also had monumental problems with my GI tract over the course of my life .................. until i finally self diagnosed that i was severely lactose intolerant. Is this a possibility with you??

If you get gassy, windy, belch a lot, have acid reflux or bloat and cramp after eating or drinking products with lactose in them then you probably lactose intolerant. I seriously can't believe the difference in my energy levels and vitality since i eliminated all milk and dairy from my diet.

To determine whether you are or not is simple ~ have a glass of milk and note how you feel 1 - 2 hours later ..... if any of the above symptoms appear then there is a high chance that you cannot tolerate lactose. No mean feat, mind you, to eliminate all 拙克力, icecream, cheese (yes even though it is very low in lactose it still disrupts my delicate little digestive system!!), cream, yoghurt (people will tell you that Yoghurt is predigested by the yoghurt's bacteria ~ however, this did not happen with me and i believe that some people simply will not tolerate it point blank), even most cheap and nasty $2 shop candy contains lactose !!

Sooooooo, now that i've perhaps bored you witless !! Sorry, had to eliminate that possibility first.

When choosing an inner health product ideally you should select one that is free of dairy, wheat, eggs, yeast, artificial flavors, colors and sweetners (Aspartame, eeeeeew!!) as even if you aren't allergy prone all of these things are completely unecessary and have no place in a digestive product.

I use a brand called Inner Health plus that is is clearly marked as Dairyogurt with probiotics brandsy Free, i'm in Australia but any good pharmacy or health food store should be able to assist you. Expect to pay around $30.00AUD for a 50g bottle ~ ensure you refridgerate it as soon as possible after purchasing it.

I was taking 1/2 a teaspoon 20 minutes before my lunch and dinner but since i have successfully managed to weed all lactose out of my diet i now only take it once every couple of weeks when i just can't resist that roast lamb or chicken (heavy in fat and harder to digest !!) ~ crikey, i must be getting a bit long in the tooth hey !!

Anyways, you can experiment.

Everyday i take 2 L-gluatmine tablets with my brekky ~ Glutamine will assist in maintaining a healthy immune system and also helps maintain the health of intestinal mucosa and is involved in regulating blood sugar and blood pH levels..... does a brilliant job of regulating my system !! It also helps me maintain clarity of mind and it supports nerve and muscle function......:0)

Sorry this is so long winded but i think you really do need to know all this... :0)

Take a multi B complex supplement also on a daily basis ~ one including all the B's as they work best synergistically ie ~ B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 and B12. The B complex of vitamins is a water soluble complex and as such our bodies can neither produce them or store them. Therefore we need to replace them on a daily basis or suffer the consequences which can range from nausea and vomiting to headaches and migraines, fatigue and exhaustion, irritability and moodiness, dizzy spells and fainting, excessive sweating, tingling and prickling and numbing sensations in the outer extremities, moodiness, even chest pains and heart palpitations !!

Pretty scary actually, if you don't realise the vitamin factor.... the B complex of vitamins is essential for healthy digestive, neural and immune system functioning?

Sooo, if you are lactose intolerant or vegetarian then you wouldn't be getting nearly enough B12 in particular in your diet and would definitely need to supplement, hey, take them anyways they're brilliant.

You can increase your good bacteria levels by adding more fibre to your diet (intestinal bacteria consume dietary fibre and metabolize it into acids that inhibit the growth of bad bacteria). ie ~ wholegrain breads and cereals, crunchy apples, carrotts and celery.

Also increase the amount of magnesium rich food in your diet as magnesium will encourage the production of hydrochloric acid in your tummy thus aiding in digestion. magnesium is essential for healthy veins and nyogurt with probiotics brandserves and of course for heart health.

Foods rich in magnesium are ~ leafy and green vegies (see your mama always told you to eat your greens !! don't worry, i never listened either), wholegrain breads and cereals, cold water fishes such as tuna, salmon, sardines and whiting and ground up nuts and seeds.

Phew !! Sorry, i do tend to go on a bit.......... oh, almost forgot Water Water Water !! Please ensure you hydrate your body properly every day and cut right back on dehydrating drinks such as coffee, tea, sodas and soft drinks (not that i reckon you indulge terribly anyways) and alcohol as these are terribly dehydrating and will also do a fine job of ripping you off of your essential water solubles C and the B complex.

After all, the happiest and healthiest body is always going to be the most hydrated one............ ?

I sincerely wish you the very best of health & vitality buddy?

CHEERS
?

?ooooops, forgot a very important of my advice ~ please ensure you supplement with a calcium tablet or eat more foods rich in calcium that contain no lactose ie ~ leafy and green vegies, cold water fishes such as tuna, sardines, salmon and whiting and ground up nuts and seeds.

I find it easier to take a Calcium supplement which also contains Vitamin D3 as Calcium needs D for effective assimilation ~ i also focus on eating calcium foods along with taking the supplement.

Calcium is also essential for the effective absorption of vitamin B12?

?
Yes, you can research different brands at NutritionalTree ( which does not sell products but does review them.
It's just a matter of choice for me with price. Most of the NOW brands are cheaper, especially at this store in Lafayette, LA Vitamin Plus. Another factor is the amount of # of bacteria you want and feel would be effective. I have seen some as low as 5,000 and some up to 18,000. what those numbers really mean I don't know but I'm assuming the higher the number the more the cultures.
Generally, if you have not been taking antibiotics, or are otherwise sick, you really don't need them. The biggest bacteria in your gut is called e. coli. There are many different strains of e.coli some of which cause "Montazuma's revenge" and then there is the infamous 00:157 strain that can be fatal.

Generally though, if you want to help your gut, yogurt is a good bet.

Hope this helps
